ARMELLE TULUNDA

“In the name of daybreak
and the eyelids of morning
and the wayfaring moon
and the night when it departs,

I swear I will not dishonor
my soul with hatred
but offer myself humbly
as a guardian of nature,
as a healer of misery,
as a messenger of wonder
as an architect of peace.

In the name of the sun and its minors
and the day that embraces it
and the cloud veils drawn over it
and the uttermost night
and the male and the female
and the plants bursting with seed
and the crowning seasons of the firefly
and the apple, I will honor all life

—wherever and in whatever form
it may dwell—on Earth my home,
and in the mansions of the stars.”

- Diane Ackerman

I recited the poem above to myself a few days before the year 2020 ended, as I registered myself as a professional artist. As far as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by the infinity of the sky and the abysses. My work as an artist and educator stems from my life-long reverence to the strength & fragility of my main ways of “knowing” : science and spirituality. From learning the name of clouds and flowers, wondering why I could stargaze with my mother in the coutryside and not from my window in the south outskirts of Paris as a child, having a short internship at an Astrophysics laboratory as a teenager, to now manifesting ideas... I’m clinging to the awe of Life as I know it from here, on Earth. I could write a statement that would make you think that I know what I do, but this would be a lie. I’m trying to stand in the unknown while following the sounds in this world that find an echo in my heart.
