one day when i was a child, i came home from school angry, asking my mom why she told me that rocks, oceans, trees and stars all had a soul since my teacher told me it wasn’t true. My mother told me i was a mixed child of two soils, two cultures : the one where i was born, and the one where all my ancestors before me were born... and that those two different ways of belonging on Earth could live together in me, since my existence was the evidence of that.

Armelle Tulunda (1994, Colombes, FR) is a visual artist and educator whose work interrogates the ways science informs, in the West, our relationship to Earth and the cosmos. By collecting images from scientific books, digging into space agencies’ archives around the planet or looking for pre-colonial Kongolese cosmology, those raw materials enables her to question the models that have shaped and continue to shape her understanding of her place on the planet as a child of two very different ways of relating with the world : science & animist religion. Her work mirrors her own relationship with those two by using mediums such as installation, analog photography, or video. Playing with the objects of one of many point of view on Earth and space that has become the point of view of humanity, her current research focuses on the invention of the global environment through space exploration, and traces of cosmology left by Bakongo people before colonization.

Armelle is a graduate of École Nationale Supérieure d’Art de Bourges and École Nationale Supérieure d’Art et de Design de Nancy (2020). Following the Lumen : Atina Residency (2018), she was selected to present her first solo show, Out of Sight, in 2019 at the Crypt Gallery in St John On Bethnal Green, London. In 2021, she was the recipient of the Emerging Artists grant of the Grand Est regional council, which enables her to be accompanied by CAC - la synagogue de Delme during a year. In 2023, she received the Culture Moves Europe Individual Grant for a residency project at SÍM, in Iceland. Her work has been exhibited in events and spaces such as equivalentbehaviour, London (UK), Biennale Photo de Mulhouse (FR), Hangar Y, Meudon (FR), Médiathèque Jean Jaurès, Nevers (FR), la Villette, Paris (FR), CAC - la synagogue de Delme's Gue(ho)st House (FR) and Chiesa San Francesco, Atina (IT).
