︎ perspectives

Research project * 2019, ongoing

first chapter : KALA (birth, dawn, emergence)

Perspectives is a series of site-specific installations in which the artist draws images of star clusters or galaxies by piercing paper with drypoints and compasses, her interpretation of an ancestral Congolese meditation technique used to invoke ancestors. If the basis of the piercing is systematically a scientific image, Armelle Tulunda is not interested in the exact reproduction of this image, but in its diversion.

Here, the image born of technological scientific prowess becomes within reach of the artist who interprets it and diverts it thanks to an ancestral gesture anchored in a spiritual relationship to the world - the same gesture used by enslaved Congolese people during the construction of the First African Baptist Church in Savannah, United States. As these installations are not visible in daylight, the artist chooses the size and pattern of each of them according to the place where they will be shown. Each of them is then revealed only in the half-light or complete darkness not only for the viewer, but also for the artist who only sees the result of her work during her exhibition.
